Monks in 1119 by Robert de Bruse. It came one of the most powerful monastery’s in Yorkshire. In 1286 disaster struck when the Monastery caught fire and completely destroyed the building. It is said it was caused by a workman leaving the lead boiling while he went for his tea. The Church was rebuilt no less than three times until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. What remains gives 
us a glimpse of the Priory’s former glory. The Priory is meant to have its own ghost and there is a tale of a tunnel under the Priory which is hiding 
a chest of gold in its depths guarded by the devil in the form of a Raven. Gisborough Hall was built by Admiral Richard Chaloner, the 1st Baron of Guisborough, in 1856. It is reputed to have three Ghosts. In 1940 the Hall was taken over by the County and used as an old Peoples Home.
in 2002 an £ 8m investment was completed to turn it into a luxurious Hotel.
